Lunar New Year is a Chinese holiday that celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar. The festival is commonly known as the Spring Festival in mainland China. Traditionally, celebrations begin the night before New Year's Day and continue until Lantern Festival, the 15th day of the year. The first day of the Chinese New Year in 2023 is January 22, which it is the Year of the Rabbit.
Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs. The festival is traditionally a time to honor gods and ancestors. In China, customs and traditions for celebrating the New Year have big difference, and the night before the Lunar New Year is often seen as a day when Chinese families gather for the annual reunion dinner. It is also a traditional custom for every household to clean the house to sweep away bad luck and make way for the coming good luck. Another custom is to decorate doors and windows with red paper-cutting and couplets. Popular themes in these cutouts and couplets include auspiciousness or happiness, wealth and longevity. Other activities include setting off firecrackers and donating money in red paper envelopes. For the northern regions of China, dumplings are an important meal to celebrate festivals.
